Unplanned Incident - North Island DWDM Outage - Dual Fibre Cuts Impacting Wellington & Tauranga Traffic Friday 29th May 2026 05:29:00

Latest update:

The upstream carrier has restored the DWDM link between Tauranga and Auckland following the earlier fibre cuts impacting the North Island DWDM rings.

Traffic has now returned to its normal routing path and latency for Wellington and Tauranga services is back to normal levels.

Monitoring confirms services are stable and this incident is now resolved.

History:

[2026-05-29 05:28:57 NZST] Lightwire has lost both East and West North Island DWDM rings due to two separate fibre cuts at different locations.

Wellington and Tauranga customer traffic is currently being rerouted via Christchuch, resulting in increased latency.

This is an ongoing major incident. We are monitoring closely and awaiting restoration updates from the upstream carrier. ETA to be confirmed
